PAM CALLS FOR URGENT JNF HOSPITAL PROBE
The People’s Action Movement (PAM) is deeply concerned about reports and a circulating voice note relating to an alleged incident at the Joseph N. France General Hospital. These reports have also renewed broader concerns about the quality of care at the country’s main health institution. Members of the Kittitian public have raised similar concerns on previous occasions about the state of the local healthcare system.
The People’s Action Movement extends its deepest condolences to the family and loved ones affected by this recent incident. Healthcare is too important for any citizen to feel uncertain about the safety, quality, or reliability of the care they receive. While the details of the reported
incident must be properly verified, the concerns it has generated cannot be dismissed or ignored, especially given the unfortunate and untimely death that resulted. Public confidence in our healthcare system must be earned through safe practices, high standards, transparency and accountability. When that confidence is shaken, a thorough and impartial examination of the circumstances is warranted, with clear
answers and appropriate action where necessary. The people of St. Kitts and Nevis, regardless of their social standing, political affiliation or economic circumstances, deserve to feel confident that when they seek medical attention, they will receive care that meets the standards they have every right to expect. We note that not every citizen has the resources to seek overseas medical care in cases of emergency, and that is why local health facilities must be given greater attention and support. PAM calls for the matter to be investigated promptly and responsibly, and for the public to be provided with credible information. The priority must be to protect patients, support healthcare professionals and ensure that the integrity of our healthcare system is never compromised. PAM also believes that this matter ought to be given priority attention, not only by the Minister of Health, but the Government generally. The public deserves reassurance, not speculation; answers, not silence; and a healthcare system they can trust and one that is good enough for all citizens.
