SAILING
Family members and friends were present at the Charlestown pier on the afternoon of Tuesday 29 th September, in support of youthful Nevisian Sailor, Elijah Walters. Walters was moments away from boarding a ferry to St. Kitts, where he would join his Coach Mikhail Rogers. Later that day, he was scheduled to board a flight, which would take him firstly to London and then on
to Portugal, where he is set to create history and represent St. Kitts and Nevis at the World Sailing Inclusion Championships.
The championship is designed to celebrate ability over limitation, providing an elite racing platform where sailors who classify as Para, and those that are a part of our wider Para Inclusive community can compete with purpose, visibility, and equity.
By integrating inclusive formats and equipment, the Championships aim to break down barriers, challenge perceptions, and set a new standard for what world-class accessible sport looks like – all while supporting the long-term goal of sailing’s reinstatement in the Paralympic Games. The championships will take place from the 4 th to the 10 th of October. In a brief ceremony which took place a pier side, several persons took time out to congratulate Walters and wish him well in the tournament.
These included Dr. William Stones, representing the St. Kitts and Nevis Sailing Association; Dr. Mamata Srinivasan, representing the Nevis Aquatics and Sailing Center and Siana Leader who represented the Nevis Sports Department.
Walters for his part, thanked his family members and sponsors and vowed to perform at his best during the championship.
